Financial Literacy

Today we had a visitor called Siale from ASB bank. He came to talk to us about the importance of looking after our money. We talked about saving, keeping our money safe and how the bank works. Siale transformed into COACH CASH and he taught us this chant: "Saving is like training! The more you save! The better you get! Oh yeah!"

Verb Poems

This week in Room 10 we chose something we did in our holidays and wrote a 'Verb Poem' about it. It was quite tricky to get the pattern right but we think they are very effective. They were all fantastic but here are a couple of examples:

My Holiday My Holiday
Climbing, climbing. Scoring, scoring.
Reaching for a rock. Tackling the person.
Going to the top. Running with the ball.
Trying not to fall. Passing to my team mates.
Fun Climbing. Going to the club rooms.
By Toby. Super scoring.
By Bailey.

My Holiday My Holiday
Shopping, shopping. Swimming, swimming.
Going to the center. Playing in the water.
Searching for some clothes. Splashing at my mum.
Spending lots of money. Holding my breath.
Busy shopping. Fun swimming.
By Luka. By Iris.

LINES FOR LOUIS!

Louis is a Year 3 at our school and he has Type 1 Diabetes.

He has to monitor his insulin levels often and throughout the day and be medicated as needed. Louis now has the opportunity to have a pump that would do all of this for him and make life much easier. Unfortunately the cost for the pump alone is $10,000 and then an ongoing cost of $300 per month and there is no government subsidy....

Royal Oak Primary wants to support the fundraising project for Louis to enable him
to have the freedom of other children at our school.

Mrs Bruce has therefore organised a mufti day for Friday 3rd June called 'Lines for Louis'. Please come to school wearing lines, checks or stripes and bring a donation to help the fundraising.

Grasshopper Tennis

The Year 2 classes are all participating in Grasshopper Tennis every Monday for four weeks.
So far we have been learning to balance the ball in different places of our racket, bounce the ball between the ground and our racket and on top of our racket. We have been doing lots of rolling, hitting and passing the ball in pairs and we have also been trying to master 'sticky ball'!

    RIPPA RUGBY

Rippa Rugby is the new game for primary schools. It is a very safe, non-contact, easy to play game for both boys and girls alike. Best of all it's fun and exciting for all involved.

While the rules are simple and the game easy to learn, Rippa Rugby will promote excellent ball handling and running skills, and give all kids a chance to participate in our national game.

The New Zealand Rugby Union is proud to recommend Rippa Rugby and we are sure it will give the kids in your school a fun safe and enjoyable sporting experience.

The above was taken directly from the following website: http://www.nzrugby.co.nz/small_blacks/rippa_rugby

Room 10 thoroughly enjoyed their two Rippa Rugby sessions with Scott this week. Ask your child about it today! :-)

    The Moods of Room 10

Room 10 wrote wonderful cameos this week to describe their moods using similes. Then, with Miss Elliotts help we each created a photo with 3 or 4 separate images displaying our moods. We had lots of fun showing our best 'angry faces'!!

Attached is a video showing the pictures and below is a couple of examples of the 'My Moods' cameos:

    My Moods:

When I'm happy I'm like a rugby player scoring a try.

When I'm excited it's like I've just come back from a party.

When I'm sad it's like I've lost my cat.

When I'm tired I'm like a sleeping cat.

When Im angry it's like I'm on fire!

    Oliver - Room 10

    My Moods:

When I'm angry I'm like a shaking earthquake.

When I'm excited I'm like a fizzy can of coke.

When I'm happy I bloom like a flower in the morning.

When I'm sad I'm like a yowling lost cat.

When I'm tired I'm like a lazy cat.

    ??? I Wonder.... ???

Room 10 have created their own 'Wonder Wall' for our new Inquiry on the 'Earths Cycles'. Inquiry learning is based on: children learning to form their own questions, students playing a big part in leading their own learning and finding out things they would like to know, and with teachers guidance, gathering and selecting information and deciding how best to share or present this.

In the picture attached the students of Room 10 have formed groups and created their own questions or queries about the 'cycles' they have observed happening around them.

Through our Inquiry we will endeavour to find the answers to these questions!

    SELF PORTRAITS by ROOM 10

We created these beautiful self portraits step by careful step with the help of Mrs Cusack and Miss Fisher. First we painted the background, then we painted the skin colour. After that we painted the eyes, the nose and the mouth. When that was dry we added hair and the clothes. Last of all we painted a frame to complement our portraits. They took us a long time! But we think they look amazing and we are very proud of them!!

Miss Fisher at Learning @ School Conference:

Next week I will be lucky enough to attend the Learning @ School Conference with Lynne Gibson and Linley Bruce. The conference is in Rotorua from the 23rd February through to Friday 26th February. We are really excited to attend this conference to network with other schools and hear presentations on exciting new ICT initiatives.
I appreciate your understanding, over my attending this during the school term time, I am positive Royal Oak Primary School and Room 10 will really benefit from my involvement. I leave Room 10 in the very capable hands of Rosemary Cusack! :-)
